A person dealing with electrical equipments like motors, generators etc should have the knowledge of all types of bearings used in equipments. Keeping it in mind, We have created this post to give you a brief idea about different types of bearings. The various types of bearings available in the market are :

Type Code

Bearing Name

Description

1

Self aligning Ball Bearing

This type of bearing has double rows of balls and a concave raceway in outer side.

Types of bearings - Self align

2

Spherical Roller Bearing

This type of bearing has double rows of rollers, a concave raceway in outer side and double raceways in inner side.

Types of bearings - Spherical

3

Double row Angular contact Ball bearing

This type of bearing has double rows of balls and double concave raceway in outer side and inner side.

Types of bearings ITypes of bearings - double row

4

Double row Ball Bearing

This type of bearing has its design similar to single row ball bearing. The only difference is that it has double rows of balls.

Types of bearings II Types of bearings - double row ball

5

Thrust Ball bearing

This type of bearing has washer type raceway in both sides surrounding the caged rolling balls. They are used where rotation is required between parts of a system.

Types of bearings 5 Types of bearings - thrust ball bearing

6

Single row deep groove ball bearing

They are the most commonly used ball bearings. Suitable for small axial loads

7

Single row angular contact bearing

They are generally used for axial and radial loads. But only in one direction.

8

Felt seal bearing

This type of bearing contains one or more felt seals. Its inner raceway is a bit large. This is to ensure that the seal edge should not go beyond inner raceway.

32 / T

Tapered Roller Bearing

This type of most commonly used for wheels. They have rollers in place of balls and are conical in shape. They can withstand high axial/radial loads.

R

Inch Bearing

They are ball bearings with one row and are available in various inch sizes.

Available in various shapes and designs.

N

Cylindrical roller bearing

These types of bearings use cylinders as rollers in place of balls. They are available in various shapes and designs.

Types of bearings NTypes of bearings - Cylinrical roller bearing

NN

Double row roller bearing

As the name suggests, they have two rows of rollers. They can withstand heavy loads.

Available in various shapes and designs.

NA

Needle roller bearing

These types of bearings contain cylinders as rollers. They are name so because the length of the cylinder used is much more in comparison to its diameter.

Types of bearings - needle roller bearing

BK

Needle roller bearing with closed end (Drawn cup)

These types of needle roller bearings are made closed type to protect it from any moisture ingress and external contaminants. They hold the grease within it.

Types of bearings - drawn up needle roller bearing closed

HK

Needle roller bearing with open ends (Drawn cup)

These types of needle roller bearings are same as needle roller bearing with closed end except that its both ends are open.

Types of bearings - needle roller bearings open end

C

CARB toroidal roller bearings

It contains the properties of both spherical rollers as well as cylindrical rollers i.e. it is self aligning as well as free in axis.

 Types of bearings - CARB

K

Needle roller and cage thrust assembly

They are similar to Thrust ball bearing except that they contains cylindrical rollers in place of balls.

Types of bearings - Needle roller and cage thrust assemblies

QJ

Four-point contact ball bearings

They are similar to single row angular contact ball bearing except than in this case, both the inner and outer raceways are split in two half sections.
