Capacitor Types in Market with Description
In addition to the capacitors listed in earlier post, the following capacitors are also widely used in PCBs: –
1. Polyester Film Capacitor Types
These type of capacitors also contains dielectric film sandwiched with the plate film. They are available at a very low cost and provide tolerance of 5% to 10 %.
2. Metalized Polyester Film Capacitor Types
They are also a type of previously explained Polyester film capacitor. However, they carry a remarkable difference to them. In this type of capacitors, the polyester film is itself completely metalized. Advantage of this is that we can get high value of capacitance in a small size capacitor.
3. Poly-Carbonate Capacitor Types
These types of capacitors are very reliable and are used where performance is of utmost importance. They have a high tolerance level and keep their capacitance value through a longer period of time.
They also have a large temperature tolerance level from -55°C to +125°C. The production of this type of capacitor has been stopped now and is available in a very small quantity.
4. Poly-Propylene Capacitor Types
These type of capacitors use polypropylene film as the dielectric material. They have capacitance range above the Polycarbonate capacitor.
They are generally available in the leaded form.
5. Glass Capacitors Types
These type of capacitors use glass as a dielectric medium. They are mostly used in RF functions.
They are very costly but are the best choice when performance matters the most. They have negligible loss and almost no noise.
6. Super Capacitors Types
They are commonly known as Super capacitors or Electrochemical double layer capacitors (EDLCs) or Ultra capacitors. These types of capacitors have very high capacitance value ranging in thousands of farads.
They are exceptional electricity storing apparatus which have more energy storing capability than typical capacitors and a very high power density in comparison to the batteries.
7. Variable Capacitors Types
As the name suggests, the capacitance of such capacitors can be varied manually. They consist two different set of plates. One is fixe and other is movable. They use air as the dielectric material. It is the position of the movable plates which decides the value of capacitance.
8. Aluminium Electrolytic Capacitors Types
These are a type of electrolytic capacitors. They are named so as thee dielectric material which is used in these capacitors is Aluminium Oxide.
They have a very high tolerance value and the capacitance ranges is from 1µF to 47 x 103 µF.
