How to use Curve Tool
Curved Line tool is used to create straight and curved lines. To use this tool,
- Launch the SAI Paint Tool application.
- Click on the “File” heading and then on “Layer” heading.
- Under the context menu, select “New Linework Layer”.
- Pick a color for your curve and choose a size preset for your curve from the options in “Advanced Settings” heading.
- Click on “Curve” to use the tool.
How to use Layer Panel
Layer Panel controls layer selection of any digital image with different settings such as:
- Texture
- Effect
- Mode
- Opacity
Texture
You can select different textures for a layer like water color, drawing paper etc. from the drop-down menu as shown in the Fig. 3. You can also choose appropriate scale for the textures.
Effect
Different effects can be selected based on the artists perspective.
Mode
You can set Layer composition Mode with different options provided such as:
- Normal
- Multiply
- Screen
- Luminosity
- Shade
- Overlay
Opacity
You can control layer Opacity with this feature by dragging the slider to the left or right. You can check the option: “Preserve Opacity” to lock the layers’ transparency level.

How to Apply Filters
There are two types of effect options under “Filter” Tab, and they are:
- Hue and Saturation
- Brightness and Contrast
How to Choose Colors
You can choose colors for your art work with the help of Color Wheel on the left side of Paint Tool SAI by default. First, select a brush and click on a color from the Color Wheel. Two colors can be selected at a time and these colors are visible in the two squares above the brushes. You can toggle between the two colors by clicking on the arrows provided.
Creating your own palette is easy with “Swatches” feature. With this, 112 additional colors can be added. To save/ Delete a color, simply right click on the small box within the Swatches and choose Set to save a color and Delete to discard a color.

Advantages of SAI Paint Tool
The advantages include:
- The interface of this tool is user friendly.
- Amateur artists can also use this tool easily.
- Creating Manga and Anime designs are relatively simple.
Disadvantages of SAI Paint Tool
The disadvantages include:
- The application does not include Print feature. However, you can export your work to BMP or PSD files.
- There is no provision for adding text or gradient to your work.
