You all have recently seen ‘4G’ ads on your television sets and even during browsing. Already this technology (4G) has created a buzz in Indian communication market. Airtel has introduced it now in India and many more Telecom giants are planning to showcase it too. Many of you have considered it as a must and already plans are in action to purchase it. In this post ‘3G Vs LTE (4G) – evolution of mobile networks‘, we will first provide you a brief introduction to the development of these different mobile networks.

Evolution of mobile network technologies

To a normal user of smartphone like me (Please do not laugh. These quick technological upgradations really freak me out), The words 3G, 4G, HSPA, LTE etc really sounds as if they are some sort of secret missions of NASA. But, if you are planning to buy a smartphone, these words have quite a significant value. Even the Tele communication joints and the smartphone companies are luring the customers with this 4G technology to attain the network as well as purchasing its products. But for us (the end user), what do we see when we compare 3G Vs LTE (4G)? What are the advantages and disadvantages of 4G? Or you are just overlooking these important factors? Well…… the decision is yours. But before taking any decision, understand the basics. It may save your few bucks.

The ‘G’ in the word 2G/3G/4G means ‘Generation’ of the Tele-Communication technology which is supported by your phone and the mobile network. As the G evolves to its superior value, new technology is introduced for a better voice and data network. And so, a new phone supporting its technology is required.

The same thing happened when your basic phone (analog-type like Nokia 3310/3315, earlier Reliance phones etc) supporting ‘G’ technology was replaced by digital-type phones having 2G technology. You may remember using a dead slow internet on your phone showing G/2G in 2008/2009. Then 3G/3.5G came with impressive smartphones and the addiction of the phone as well as its fast internet increased in our country. Almost every mobile network company now provides the 3G network, though the rates sadly differ a lot in India. Now the era of 4G has begun (in India) and a lot of speculations are there with it. The topic ‘3G Vs LTE (4G) is one of the most trending topics in India these days.

Note: Here we are discussing about the phones and networks in common people’s reach. Just for information, USA got its 3G technology in 2003 only. The 4G technology is quite old there now and the 5G technology is planned to be introduced on a large scale basis by 2020. Without comparing the countries, our aim is to discuss the evolvement of mobile network technology in India and that too keeping in mind its availability to common mass.

Now you have got a general idea about the evolution of mobile networks. In my next post, We will learn “What is 4G”. Till then, keep learning.
