Whenever we go to buy a new smartphone, we do not even have a clear idea about which Network (3G or 4G) we should prefer. In general, most of the people think that the higher is the cellular network technology number (2G / 3G/ 4G) the best it is. But it is not true always.

We should always select the one which is best suitable for our requirements. It will save your money and enhance your smartphone battery as well.

In this post, we will try to understand What is 4G. But first we have to know about 3G. This will give you a better idea why 4G is acquiring so much attention.

4g Cellular network technology

Introduction to 3G Cellular Network Technology

As mentioned in our earlier post, 3G first came in India somewhere around 2008-2009. It was initially introduced in USA in 2003 with a proclamation of providing a “mobile-broadband” with minimum speed of 144 kbps.

Post its introduction, many developments were carried out in 3G network and the speed was increased to a range of 400 kbps to few mbps. This has been true in case of USA and some other countries, but in India the speed never improved as expected. The credit goes to the Telecom giants and our Telecom policies.

What is 4G Cellular Network Technology

Now, the 4G technology has arrived in India. In contrast to its earlier networking technologies (G/2G/3G), the main concentration of 4G technology is on transmission of data and not on voice.

It is also said that 4G technology is likely to be a big competitor of Cable-Internet-providers as the data speed of 4G may even be fast enough to come in line with optical-fibre-cables.

Comparison Between 3G and 4G Cellular Network Technology

It is supposed (and proclaimed) to be more faster than 3G, almost ten times, but there is a catch too. As of now, we have a lot of technologies that may fall into 4G category. The methods of implementing it varies too. This word 4G became so clueless that the ITU (International-Telecommunication-Union) also stepped in to clarify it and issued some basic guidelines as standards for calling a network ‘4G’.

But unfortunately, the Telecom giants did not adhered to the guidelines. Now 4G consists HSPA +21/42, WiMAX (obsolete now) and LTE technologies. Here LTE stands for Long Term Evolution.

There are different opinions even in case of these 4G technologies. A bunch of techies say that LTE is the only qualified 4G technology, while another bunch say that none of the technologies have the speed to qualify for being a 4G network.

But this needs to be mentioned that the upload speed of LTE is far better than its other counterparts. The arrival of 4G technology is a milestone in other way too. With 4G technology, our mobile networking technology has shifted its focus from voice services to data services.
